Brandy Alexander is a sweet, brandy-based cocktail consisting of cognac and crème de cacao that became popular during the early 20th century.

It was supposedly created at the time of the wedding of Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles, in London, in 1922.[1] There is another version that states the Brandy Alexander could be named after the Russian tsar, Alexander II.[2]

The Brandy Alexander is based on an earlier, gin-based cocktail called simply an "Alexander".

Although commonly thought to be named after the drama critic/celebrity Alexander Woollcott, the drink is believed to have been named after the tsar, Alexander II of Russia.
